Mark Obbie
Associate Professor, Magazine Journalism; founding director, Carnegie Legal Reporting Program

Mark Obbie is founding director of the Carnegie Legal Reporting Program at the Newhouse School. Since 2004 he has been a full-time faculty member at Newhouse, teaching magazine editing, news reporting and writing, and media law.

Professor Obbie has been a legal journalist for more than 25 years. Some of his most recent work has appeared in Inc. and Slate. Before he joined the Newhouse faculty, he was executive editor of The American Lawyer, the monthly magazine covering the most important lawyers and law firms in the world. At The American Lawyer, he was responsible for day to day newsroom management, editing all parts of the magazine, and recruiting new talent to the magazines respected training program. In his career, he has managed a network of legal news Web sites, edited and published a weekly statewide legal newspaper in Texas, and covered cops, courts, and government for daily newspapers, including The Houston Post.
